from trees to wood....
We have a lot of trees at Ewe Close Farm, especially coniferous softwood such as spruce. These trees were planted especially for making things out of. We are now harvesting the trees to make our new barn, but before we can use the wood it needs to be cut into useable pieces of timber.
Martin & Will from the local saw mill were hired to help us. They bought with them a special saw called a wood mizer... see what they got up to:
| Logs are loaded onto the wood mizer using the tractor |
The round edges of the logs are cut off to make the log square |
The square log is then sliced into thin boards |
| Soon you have a pile of boards stacked and ready for use |
The offcuts (rounded edges) are not wasted... |
...they will be turned into firewood |
